Why Age Is Just A Number.

In 2012 I left a comfortably paid, and yet somewhat boring job as a mid manager for The BBC to become a Futures trader. It was scary at the time but I wanted excitement and knew something had to change in my life.

I became the oldest apprentice for the biggest Futures desk in the world. Not only that I was tasked to trade German debt and we were smack in the middle of The Greek Crisis.

I was excited and terrified in equal measures, but I was also a man with a mission and AGE was not going to stop me. Being 38 I thought I was old. I laugh now because I will turn 57 in 3 weeks.

In my second year I made a lot of money and my life really took on a whole new meaning. Of course money helps but for me it helped me do the things I dreamt of.

The lightbulb moment was realising that time is the real currency. And age is just a number.

Fast forward ten years and we have signed a partnership deal with LSEG (The London Stock Exchange) I am a visiting lecturer at The University of Cambridge and we have mentored over 600 older clients to live their best and final chapter.

Being a trader in the current markets is not easy and passion wins over intelligence. I have seen some very smart, yet lazy rocket scientists fail because they thought their IQ was above the markets.

Here are my top 5 tips to change your career if you are older like me.

Do not give up on the day job just yet. I did that before I made it and it was hard. Give yourself a runway of at least a year. If you think that is long then trading is not for you. Think about another profession – like being a doctor. That takes north of 7 years. You need to manage your expectation.
Each day set aside 30 mins to connect with someone who is doing the job you want to do. You made it this far because you can connect with me! Please DM me in Linkedin and I always reply.
Times will be tough but passion and grit will win any day. Remember most people like to talk about the next chapter – very few actually do it.
