In a recent Economic Intelligence UnitReport, ‘Competing Across Borders – HowCultural and Communication Barriers affect Business’ (2012), 90% ofbusiness executives surveyed reported that their workplaces had become moreinternational and cited a need for more effective systems and processes ofcross-border communication. 50% confirmed culturally based miscommunication hadprevented a cross-border transaction and this led to financial loss. Keybarriers to the success of cross-border working are differences in culturaltraditions and workplace norms. As Professor Nancy Adler comments in thereport: “There is a false assumption that just because we can reach anyone inthe world so easily through email or Skype, we are therefore all the same” (p.4).

Building networks is one means of achievingeffective communication and mutual understanding, and thereby increasinginfluence.  However the qualities of aneffective network, access to networks, and processes of networking differ acrossgenders and cultures.

On 3 March, come along to a jointlysponsored event by the BBG Women in Business Focus Group and the BusinessThrough Learning Focus Group to find out:

* Why youand your organisation should be interested in these issues of management, culturesand genders

* How youcan develop networking skills amongst all employees
