Alderman Jeffrey Mountevans waselected Lord Mayor of the City of London on 29th September 2015 and took officeas the 688th Lord Mayor on the 13th November.

On 24^th January 2016,the BBG welcomes the Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of the City of London, AldermanJeffrey Mountevans to its first Signature Dinner of the year. Members andtheir guests are invited to join Alderman Mountevans at Sheraton Grand Hotel to hear howhe will approach his year in office and his thoughts on the UK and inparticular, London’s economic landscape.

Lord Mountevans was born andspent his early years in Gothenburg, Sweden, and was later educated at theNautical College Pangbourne. He studied at Pembroke College Cambridge where heread Economics before starting his City career in 1972 as a graduate traineewith the international shipbroker Clarksons, the world’s leading shippingservices provider. He was appointed to the Board in 1989 and served as ManagingDirector of the Gas Division until 2014.

Jeffrey is a Member of theBaltic Exchange, a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and aYounger Brother of Trinity House. He recently stood down as Chairman ofMaritime UK. He chairs Maritime London, the umbrella organisation promotingLondon and the UK’s maritime professional.

In 2007 Jeffrey was electedAlderman for the Ward of Cheap, serving as Sheriff of the City of London2012-13. He has been heavily involved in schools that are closely related tothe City and is an Almoner of Christ’s Hospital, and is Deputy Chairman of theCity of London Academy Islington, as well as a Trustee of the St Paul’s CathedralChorister Trust, and a member of the Corporation’s Education Board.

Alderman Mountevans was PrimeWarden of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights 2006-7. He is a Liveryman ofthe Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and of the Worshipful Company of World Tradersand is an Honorary Liveryman and Court Assistant of the Worshipful Company ofWheelwrights as well as an Honorary Liveryman of the Worshipful Company ofSecurity Professionals.

His other charity involvementshave a distinctly maritime theme. He is a Council Member and Trustee of theWhite Ensign Association, which gives advice on personal, financial andemployment matters to all ranks of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. He is aTrustee of Seafarers UK, the leading national maritime charity and President ofthe City of London Sea Cadets. He was recently appointed an Honorary Commanderin the Royal Naval Reserve.

In July 2015 he was elected to sit as a Hereditary Crossbench Peer in the Houseof Lords.

Jeffrey has been married to Julietfor 43 years. A Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners, Juliet is aformer solicitor (maritime litigation) and more recently Adviser at ChelseaCitizens’ Advice Bureau. They have two sons.
